H1N1 (Swine Flu) Update – For Parents and Caregivers
What is H1n1 (swine flu) ?
Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza among pigs. Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans, however Public Health officials have determined that this strain of swine flu virus spreads from human to human and can cause illness.
As of 4/30/09, 11:00 am Modoc County has no confirmed cases.
There are currently14 confirmed cases in CALIFORNIA.
What are the symptoms of H1N1 Flu?
Symptoms of swine flu are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu in humans and may include:
· Fever (greater than 100 à¹F or 37.8 à¹C)
· Sore throat
· Cough
· Chills
· Headache and body aches
· Fatique
· Diarrhea and/or vomiting
If your child has any of these symptoms it is important that you keep him or her home. Seek immediate medical attention if he or she has the following:
· Fast breathing or trouble breathing
· Bluish skin color
· Not drinking enough fluids
· Not waking up or not interacting (lethargic)
· Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
· Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
· Fever with a rash
How is it spread?
· Through contact with infected pigs and/or contact with a person with swine flu through coughing or sneezing.
· People are considered contagious as long as they are symptomatic and possibly for up to seven days following illness onset.
· You cannot get swine flu from eating or preparing pork – eating properly handled pork products is safe.
What can parents do?
· Wash hands frequently especially after coughing or sneezing.
· Encourage children to wash their hands frequently or use hand sanitizer.
· If you or your child have symptoms of flu stay home from work and school and contact your healthcare provider.
