According to a recent study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, Americans may be falling asleep at the wheel of their own retirements. Although more and more of us must count on our own personal savings and our 401(k) to finance our retirements, many people are not clear on what will be available to live on in retirement.

While 41% of workers say they have a "pension" from their company, 62% of workers say they expect some type of retirment income. 21% of those people are badly mistaken!
Many workers expect to receive retiree health insurance benefits. The trend is for companies to not offer such a plan or to cancel an existing plan.
Although professional advice is available to many retirement plan participants, two thirds of workers say they would implement only part of this advice and one in 10 would ignore it altogether.
One third of retirees think they are covered for long-term care expenses (nursing home coverage and home health care). The EBRI study finds only 10% actually have coverage outside of the few days Medicare covers.
We just aren't saving enough. Almost 50% of workers saving for retirement have less than $25,000 put away. Seven in 10 of these workers have less than $10,000.
Whether we like it or not, we are responsible for funding our "golden years." Here are six steps to making the most of your 401(k)--and securing your financial freedom in retirement.

1. Focus on Your Goal
Just what is it that you want your retirement dollars to do? As you get closer to your retirement goal, you may want to work on preserving your portfolio. And don't forget the tax benefit. Your $3,500 contribution can shave almost $500 off your tax bill. All in all, a 401(k) plan is a powerful way to build a nest egg.

So start contributing now. Contribute as much as you possibly can. And if you can start with only a 1% or 2% contribution, promise yourself to increase your rate every year until you max out. If you have to borrow at some point in time, try to find other alternatives. Maybe you can borrow from your insurance policy instead, or take out a home-equity loan. Just remember to preserve your retirement account, if at all possible.

People sometimes wind up with deceased parents, friends from college, or ex-spouses listed as current beneficiaries. So do yourself a favor. Call your human resources representative and ask to see your current beneficiary designations. Don't waste all that hard work socking money away only to have it go to someone who's no longer a part of your life.
